Meeting Notes

Here are some notes from RPS: Equity in Family Engagement:

Dr. Anthony Muhammad

    • The vision of an equity environment is when we should not be able to predict achievement because of personal characteristics.  A personal characteristic could be your zip code, race, culture, special needs, way of dressing.....  Equity is a guarantee of high level of learning for all students.  He kept emphasizing "all students".
    • He said we need to move schools from an invitation to learn ( it's up to you to learn) to a guarantee that you learn.  He also said schools have been meritocracy, a competition.  For equity in schools there needs to be a shift to egalitarianism, removing inequalities among people.
The vision of an equity environment is when we should not be able to predict achievement because of personal characteristics.
  • For egalitarianism the following two mindsets need to change, superiority and victim.
    • Superiority mindset leads to paternalism, competition, and standard bearing.  If you're feeling superior, you' like to keep the status quo, to feel special.
    • If you're feeling like a victim then change is difficult and someone else is a predator.  Victim mindset leads to learned irresponsibility, low motivation, and low expectations.
  • Another change suggested was intellectual stimulation versus entertainment in the home.  By groups of families who'd most likely to promote intellectual stimulation were first Asian, second Caucasian, third Hispanic, and fourth African Americans.
  • For an equity environment in schools: the bar is a guarantee that all students learn
    • high expectations for all students
    • remove mindsets of superiority and victim
    • promote intellectual stimulation in the home
  • He suggested that we move to a liberation mindset for our children to do what they love and do it well.  The liberation mindset leads to answers to:
    • Who am I?
    • What is my place in the world?
  • An equity environment requires commitment to equality (all kids can learn, all kids can be successful), responsibility, and advocacy (advocate for your children, support their growth.

Dr. Luiz Cruz

suggested 7 things parents can do
1. Eat together, put away the cell phone, listen to your children.  In a busy schedule, schedule a meal together, family night
2. Be the behavior you want your children to emulate.
They see, hear you and then  become you (behave like you).
3. Time management
We need to teach our children how to manage time with schedules and routines.
    Create routines.
4. Children need to learn how to be organized and responsible.
Give your children some responsibility - some chores around the home.
Mothers repeat this " I am not your maid"
5. Make success in school a priority.
Know what reading level your child is at.
    6. Focus on your children being able to read and write at their grade level.
Make a routine of going to the library weekly.  Have books in the home.
Read newspaper together once a week - promotes thinking.
7. Mathematics- focus on arithmetic- adding, substracting, multiplication, division.
Keep it up - these 7 things.   Consistency is important.

I believe that conversation is necessary but not sufficient. We need to follow up with actions. Here is a 5+1 action plan.

About Beam
  • For the commercial sector, we tend to register startup activities (new companies and new commercial projects) that bring diversification and high-impact opportunities to the area.
  • For the non-profit sector, we wish to shine light on all the organizations and services that otherwise labor under relative obscurity.
  • Our hope is that dmcbeam.org will encourage cross-sector collaborations and creative solutions.

While there are a number of registries in the community, dmcbeam.org's  distinct value is to pilot a database with a data structure and categorizations that answer the questions such as: What organizations or projects/programs in our community that have purported relevance with some of the over-arching focuses put forward by initiatives such as DMC, J2G and Health Improvements?

This database could be used as one of the ways to explore the capacities of the community. If you are someone on an exploratory journey to learn about the greater Rochester community. dmcbeam.org could be an interesting first step.
